The back of this shirt depicts 'OLD SOLDIER' in Semaphore, a visual means of communication in which a signalman relays letters or numbers by holding 2 flags in specific positions.
Initially developed in 1790’s France for use on land, Semaphore was widely adopted by the maritime industry (including the US Navy) in the 1800s as mariners found the flags to be a fast and easy way to communicate between ships.
Today, Semaphore is still used at sea during underway replenishment and is acceptable for emergency communication in daylight or with lighted wands instead of flags at night.
